NBCU was started by a group of city workers in 1932.

NBCU was located in a small room on the second floor of the central fire station. Membership was only open to city of New Bedford employees and their immediate family members. At that time members were limited to $5 in deposits per week.

Today the New Bedford Credit Union has grown dramatically. The Main Office is located across the street from the fire station at 1150 Purchase Street in New Bedford. There is also a branch in the North End of New Bedford at 120 Dawson Street. The credit union has over 30 employees and has topped $100 Million in assets. Membership is now open to anyone living or working in the Greater New Bedford area. Through the years while many aspects of the credit union have changed, the personalized service remains the same. Members are called by name and are treated more like a friend than just a customer.

As the credit union has grown it has been able to offer many different products and services. The credit union has gone from offering savings accounts and small loans to now offering products and services to fit anyone at any stage of life. Some of the loans we offer are mortgages, fixed and variable rate home equity loans, personal loans, new and used car loans, and a VISA card. We also offer different term certificates, money market accounts, checking account, and Christmas clubs. Services such as online banking, eStatements and VISA Debit/ATM cards are also available.
